A house facing the lagoon, attentive to water, energy, waste, local life and the fragile balance of the desert.
Preserving a rare place
Dakhla is an environmental exception. A city facing the desert, between lagoon, wind and ocean, at the edge of the world. Its ecosystem is unique, spectacular and fragile.
At Palais Rhoul Dakhla, we believe that the experience of a guest house should not generate waste of precious resources, nor an overproduction of waste or pollution. Following an impact study carried out with an international consultancy, we created an environmental charter to place our activity within a more responsible approach.
This charter is based on preserving the site, saving water and energy, reducing waste, adopting a more respectful purchasing policy and supporting the economic development of our Southern province. It guides our daily decisions, as well as the simple gestures that allow our guests to take part in this approach during their stay.
The essential rather than the superfluous
In the bathroom, the idea that the more amenities there are, the better the service, has long shaped the hotel industry. The reality is often less elegant: a large part of these products ends up in the bin without ever being used.
In Dakhla, this question takes on a particular dimension. Unnecessary waste does not simply disappear. It is stored in the desert, in a region where recycling channels remain limited and where the open-air landfill lies several dozen kilometres from the city.
We have therefore chosen to offer what is essential, with precision, rather than accumulating single-use products. This choice helps limit waste, avoid unnecessary costs being built into the room rate, and above all respect the fragile ecological balance of the desert around us.
The shower products and soaps provided in the rooms are natural and certified organic. Products that can still be used after departure are redistributed free of charge whenever possible. Water is served in glass bottles in order to reduce the use of plastic.
Concrete actions every day
Our commitment is reflected in simple but constant choices. We save water through regulators installed on the taps. Certain waters are recovered, after natural filtration, for the maintenance of outdoor spaces. A significant part of our wastewater is treated through a natural overflow-bed system.
The swimming pool uses an ecological UV lamp filtration system, allowing us to greatly reduce the use of chemical products. We use low-consumption light bulbs, monitor our energy use and favour more responsible equipment.
Plastic bottles are avoided as much as possible. Eco-labelled cleaning products are preferred for the laundry. Sheets and towels are not changed daily, unless requested by the guest, in order to limit the use of water, energy and washing products.
We do not use pesticides. We favour suppliers who respect their environment, regional products, short supply chains and produce from organic or responsible agriculture whenever possible.
During fishing or spearfishing outings, we take only what will be immediately consumed, respecting biological rest periods and the natural balance of the lagoon.
A house committed to its territory
Palais Rhoul Dakhla is also a house turned towards its territory. At least 90% of our team comes from the surrounding towns and villages. We favour local suppliers, regional gastronomic products and purchases that contribute to local economic development.
Our commitment does not stop at the environment. The house also seeks to support those around it, through its own foundation or through concrete local actions. For example, we systematically prepare one extra meal for every three meals, for the local population.
We also contributed to the financing of Dakhla’s first medical centre dedicated to vulnerable people. These actions are part of the spirit of the house: to welcome, preserve, transmit and contribute, at our own scale, to what surrounds us.
During your stay
A few simple gestures allow each guest to take part in this approach.
We invite you to use water with care, not to leave taps running unnecessarily, to unplug chargers when they are not connected to a device being charged, and to renew bathroom linen and pool towels reasonably.
We do not provide single-use slippers. There is no real recycling channel for this in Dakhla, and this type of product too often ends up as wind-exposed waste, with a direct impact on the desert and the lagoon. We therefore recommend bringing a pair of flip-flops or reusable sandals for moving around the house.
When air conditioning is used, windows and glass doors must remain closed in order to avoid unnecessary overconsumption.
We also ask that nothing be thrown into the toilets other than the paper provided for that purpose.
Selective sorting receives particular attention: cardboard, plastic, glass, batteries, oils and food waste are collected separately whenever local channels allow it. Used batteries may be left in the main lounge. Medicines or specific waste may be handed to our team so that they can be directed towards the appropriate channels.
Our environmental commitment is not a fixed discourse. It evolves with the place, the constraints of the territory and the solutions available in Dakhla. It is part of the spirit of Palais Rhoul: preserving what surrounds us, limiting what can be limited, and offering a stay that is more attentive, more balanced and more respectful of both lagoon and desert.
