Dakhla sits on a narrow peninsula on Morocco's Atlantic coast, between the open ocean and a sheltered lagoon. The Sahara begins a few kilometres inland. It has stayed largely outside mainstream tourism circuits, which is part of what makes it worth the journey.

The landscape

The Dakhla lagoon is flat, shallow and protected from swell by the dunes that frame it. The water is turquoise and warm year-round. On the other side of the peninsula, the Atlantic is open and exposed. Between the two, the town runs along the coast — low-rise, unhurried, with its markets, fishing harbour and everyday rhythm.

Kitesurfing

Dakhla has become one of the reference kitesurfing destinations in the world. The trade winds blow consistently, the lagoon offers flat water with no significant current or swell, and conditions suit beginners and advanced riders equally. Kite No Limit, the Palais Rhoul's partner school, runs lessons for all levels directly on the spot.

Wildlife

The lagoon hosts migratory birds throughout the year — flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, herons. Dolphins and monk seals are found in the bay. Boat excursions allow visitors to move through the ecosystem without disturbing it. Early morning and evening offer the best sightings.

Local culture

Dakhla's markets carry handwoven textiles, silver jewellery, spices and local produce. The cuisine draws on Sahrawi, Moroccan and Atlantic influences — fish is central, prepared simply and always fresh. The fishing villages of PK-5 and PK-12 just outside town are worth a visit for anyone interested in the daily rhythms of the coast.

The desert

The dunes are minutes from the centre. The Dune Blanche is the most accessible excursion from Dakhla — a drive into the sand landscape that borders the lagoon. Further out, bivouac stays with nomadic families are available through local operators.
